New Delhi: Despite facing significant global headwinds, India has made remarkable strides in its journey towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The NITI Aayog, India’s premier policy think tank, released data for the year 2023-24, revealing an impressive overall SDG score of 71.
At a press briefing in Delhi, NITI Aayog CEO B. V. R. Subrahmanyam expressed satisfaction with the country’s progress. He asserted that India is well on track to meet the targets set by the United Nations by 2030. “Significant progress has been made in eliminating poverty, providing decent work and economic growth, addressing climate change, and promoting life on land,” Subrahmanyam said.
India’s overall SDG score has seen a substantial rise from 57 in 2018, a feat attributed to targeted interventions by the Modi government’s flagship schemes such as PM Awas Yojna, Ujjwala, Swachh Bharat, Ayushman Bharat, and Start-up India. These initiatives have played a crucial role in driving the nation’s development agenda forward.
Among the states, Uttarakhand and Kerala have topped the list, showcasing exemplary performance in various SDG indicators. Chandigarh has emerged as the leader in the Union Territory category.
The achievements highlighted by the NITI Aayog underscore India’s commitment to sustainable development and its determination to overcome challenges, thereby ensuring a better future for its citizens.
