Kathmandu, Nepal – Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal ‘Prachanda’ has lost his position as the top executive of Nepal after failing to secure a vote of confidence in the House of Representatives (HoR) today.
In a significant political shift, 194 members of the HoR voted against his proposal for a vote of confidence, while only 63 members supported him. One member remained neutral. The session saw the attendance of 258 HoR members on Friday.
Following the vote, Speaker Devraj Ghimire announced that PM Prachanda’s confidence motion was denied by a majority of the HoR members. To maintain his position, Prachanda needed the support of at least 138 lawmakers.
Invoking Article 100 (2) of the Constitution of Nepal, PM Prachanda tabled the motion on Friday. This marked the fifth time PM Dahal faced a floor test since assuming office. Chairman of the CPN (Maoist Centre), Pushpa Kamal Dahal became Prime Minister for the third time on December 25, 2022.
With Prachanda’s ousting, the two largest parties, Nepali Congress and CPN-UML, are expected to collaborate to form a new government.
